After the Fall

Preparing for my first solo exhibit at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum, I wanted to create a new piece for the show rather quickly. The leaf was machine pieced together, but I left all the edges 'raw.' Then I ripped some strips of fabric and basted them together. I covered it all with bridal tulle, and quilted the layers together. I think it turned out terrific, but it turned out not to be a technique I used again, and I LOVE the quilting on th leaf. With a little coercion by the RMQM staff, I ended up donating it to their annual Fabric and Friends auction.

Butterfly Study I

One day while visiting my friends Ken and Debbie, I saw this small butterfly wing laying on their sidewalk in front of the house. I picked it up and put it in my pocket, thinking it might make a quilt. I scanned it into my computer, enlarged it and created a pattern. It was all paper pieced from a lot of textured prints and batiks.

Colorado Columbine

This quilt was adapted from a photo by my friend Kenny Proper. It was the first quilt on which I attempted hand piecing and hand appliqué. Until that time, I had only ever done appliqué by machine. I was hooked and have not gone back to machine applique. This quilt was a finalist at IQA Houston in 2006, and won a third place ribbon for appliqué at Quilt Colorado that same year.

Holly's Daffodil

After seeing my columbine quilt, my friend Holly asked me to create a commission piece for her of a daffodil. I had thought about doing a daffodil a year earlier, but I was daunted by all of that yellow! I decided I was up to the challenge and finally, after an aborted attempt, managed to create this quilt. I love it's depth and vibrancy. And Holly is very happy.

Hope's Golden Aspen

This is the quilt that started my aspen trees series. I had gone on a hike with my friend Maggie up to our waterfall here in Steamboat. Almost as an afterthought, I grabbed my camera on the way out the door. It was the perfect peak day for fall foliage. Using my own variation of Noriko Endo's confetti technique, the tree came to life. I was so thrilled with the finished piece, I decided to create the four seasons of aspens.

January

This is my 'lost and found' quilt. I created this after my "Walk in the Woods" quilt, which was a tribute to autumn. I wanted to make another using winter as a theme, and this quilt was the result of that endeavour. Soon after finishing it in 2002, I displayed it our local Wild Horse Gallery and it sold almost immediately. Unfortunately, I never took a photo of it. As we were preparing for my exhibit in Steamboat Springs in 2010, I got a surprise. The museum got an offer by the owners to include their 'winter' quilt in the exhibit. I was very happy to see it again, and did manage to get it photographed during the exhibit.

The Last to Fall

This was an earlier work that I designed, with intentions to create a nature quilt using the least amount of fabrics. The trunks were all created from one hand-dyed fabric I bought in Houston. I didn't fall in love with quilt until I added the one leaf (it was not in my original design.)

A Walk in the Woods

"A Walk in the Woods" is my tribute to autumn. This is one of my earliest pieces and I wanted to combine piecing and appliqué and create variety of blocks. This was my first art quilt to ever hang in a show. It was selected for the biannual mens' quilt exhibit at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum in Golden, Colorado. Ricky Tims was in attendance, and he told me I should consider a career as a quilter. Look how that little suggestion turned out! I gave the quilt to my friend Sheri for her XXth birthday. (She'd kill me if I told you.)
