Marmalade's First Snow |
My friend Jane McLeod snapped this picture of her barn cat, Marmalade, and when she showed it to me, I knew I had to turn it into a quilt. I always enjoy creating 'barn wood' from fabric and this quilt has now become a favorite, and, I think, one of my best. Marmalade's whiskers are handembroidered, and the quilt is a combination of hand appliqué with machine piecing on some of the longer sections of 'wood.'

The Sentry of Santorini Island |
I adapted this image from a photo given to me by my friend Jeannie Spring. The photo was taken while on a family vacation to the Greek island of Santorini. I love the shapes of the buildings and the umbrella. I added the cat in Photoshop as I thought the scene needed a bit of 'life.' I started the quilt during my stint as the artist-in-residence at the Empty Spools seminars at Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California in March of 2010. "Sentry" was a finalist in IQA's World of Beauty competition in Houston in the fall of 2010.

Ellen's Pick |
This quilt was created for a special exhibit organized by Road to California. The show was titled "California Ice Storm" and hung in the main lobby of the Ontario Convention Center in the spring of 2011. Participants were asked to create a dimensional icicle anywhere from 6 to 10-feet tall. My icicle came in just under 9-feet in length. A lot of the credit for this piece goes to my friend Ellen, who stayed up with me past midnight one day to choose all of the fabrics. We had a lot of fun pawing through each others stashes to find just the right colors and textures. My friend Paula and I had a blast another night, b'jeweling the back side!

My friend Kelly Gallagher-Abbott invited me to create a quilt for her military aviation quilt challenge, Thread Tails and Vapor Trails. As I was raised a Navy 'brat,' I accepted the challenge and created this quilt. The 'Seabee' logo was prevalent in our household as we kids were growing up, and I remember a huge 'bee' statue guarding the entrance to the Navy base in Rhode Island where my father was stationed at the time. I was thrilled to win First Place for Appliqué in the Challenge.

Maynard |
"Maynard" was adapted from a photo shot by my friend Hilary Spillane of her bulldog. I love the way Hil captured the stark white of a winter's day in Northwest Colorado. When I saw the image, I knew I had to turn it into a quilt, as I had been eager to try a white-on-white quilt. Of course, I ended up using different colors of thread to quilt the snow and sky - lavendar, green, tan, and a lot of blues. In 2011, "Maynard" was awarded "Best Pictorial Quilt" at Road to California, a First Place ribbon at AQS Lancaster, and a First Place award for pictorial art quilts in Houston.

Christmas Cookies |
I was excited to participate in the "America Celebrates" wall quilt exhibit, and was even more excited when I got to pick Christmas as my holiday! This quilt represents my greatest joy from Christmas 2009. My friends Debbie and Madison and I baked gingerbread and almond cookies with Maddi's "little sister" Marina and Pacome, who was visiting with his family from France. The squeals of delight from these first-time pastry chefs nearly brought us to tears - happy ones! I hope I captured the chaos of the day.

Christmas Chickadee |
I was looking out my kitchen window one winter morning and saw a little chickadee sitting on the string of Christmas lights hanging on our blue spruce. An idea for a quilt quickly sprang to mind. Since my camera wasn't handy, I later had to take three separate photos and merge them in Photoshop to create this quilt. I'm not sure the proportions are exactly correct, but I loved creating this quilt, even the 409 individually hand-appliquéd pine needles! This quilt was awarded First Place ribbons at both IQA Houston and AQS Lancaster for wall art quilts.

Up, Up and Away |
I enjoy looking at things from a different perspective and the photo of this hot-air balloon lifting off above me gave me that opportunity. It was created using the 'stained glass' technique. The sections of the balloon were basted in place, then I hand-stitched down the 'ribbing' where the edges met. The hot air was created with bleach and a cotton swab.
