"Yes, You Can Stipple!" Free Motion Quilting
Class level: Beginner
Half-day (3 hours) only
This is a beginners' class for learning free-motion machine quilting techniques on a home sewing machine. This fast-paced workshop helps quilters learn the basics through a series of quilting exercises. I believe the key to getting perfect, even stitches is based on finding your rhythm -- maintaining the speed of the machine with the speed of your hand movements. The quilt sandwiches I provide feature fabric patterns that help you learn movement. Please have sewing machines in clean, working order with a fresh needle installed.
Kit purchase required ($30):
The kit includes fabric/batting 'sandwiches' and cotton quilting threads
Students should bring:
• Clean home sewing machine in working order. Machine MUST have free-motion capability
• Fresh needle(s) for machine. Please refer to your machine manual for recommended needle size for machine quilting
• Thread snips or small scissor
• Hand-sewing needle with a large eye |

Photos to Quilts Appliqué Workshop
Class level: Intermediate
Multi-day workshop (6-hour days) only. Three-day minimum for all new contracts.
Quilters attending this multi-day workshop should have a basic understanding of appliqué techniques. I will demonstrate how to adapt a photograph into a wall quilt, using hand-applique and piecing techniques. A simple subject with a nice detail works best for my method. A great deal of time is spent on tracing and pattern drawing, along with fabric selection - which is key to my process. I will show how to get beautiful details from simple shapes and by letting the fabric do all the hard work. I will also demonstrate my appliqué technique for invisible stitching, and finish up with quilting and binding options. Click here for more in-depth information on participating in this extensive workshop. Students MUST contact me in advance of the class to discuss their image choices by email to: david@davidtaylorquilts.com.
Students should bring:
• An original color photograph
• The same photograph enlarged to the actual finished quilt size. This can be done at your local copy center - a grayscale enlargement will work just fine. The image may be pieced together (tiled) in sections from your home computer and printer, and taped together (this is how I work). Helpful tip: Working larger is easier and has more visual impact. Don't be afraid to go big!
• Pencil and eraser
• Paper scissor
• Fabric scissor
• Canson tracing paper, enough to cover entire image
• Freezer paper, enough to cover entire image
• Scotch tape
• Liquid or spray starch
• Small nylon artist's paint brush
• Hand-sewing needle: I use John James Gold'n Glide #10
• Hand-sewing thread: I use Masterpiece by Superior Threads
• Straight pins for applique
• Plenty of appropriate fabric selections. Tone on tone and traditional prints should be used sparingly. Colorful textured prints, batiks, hand-dyes, marbled and "busy" fabrics work best.
• Resealable plastic bags (to organize pattern pieces)
• Mini-iron and ironing pad (optional, but useful)
• Fusible web (optional, for those who wish to use their own fusible applique technique, instead of hand sewing.)

"The Reluctant Journey of an Art Quilter"
I'm available for speaking engagments to guilds and other art/quilt groups. As those close to me already know, my favorite topic to talk about is myself. I prefer taking questions during the lecture to encourage audience interaction. Included is a trunk show of recent works (and some earlier ones whenever possible) and a digital slide show of selected works.
