I Ain't No Spring Chicken!

My friend Jackie Owen snapped the image of a rooster while on a photoraphy assignment. She gave me the image when I decided it would make an excellent quilt. I love this rooster's attitude. I spent more time creating the barn wood than I did on the rooster. This is my favorite quilt to date, and I think, my best. My 'chicken quilt' won Best of Show at IQA's spring festival in Chicago in 2008. He now lives with my friends André and Francois Girod in Provence.

Little S'Tinker

During the spring of 2008, my friend Cheryl invited me out to her ranch to see all the spring babies. Tinker the goat stole my heart and he was a natural ham in front of my camera. His facial expressions were priceless, and this one had to become a quilt. I added the barn wood in photoshop to match my rooster quilt, and the idea for my Colorado Barn Series was born. Tinker has won the IQA "People's Choice" award in Chicago and the "Judge's Choice" award at Road to California.

Keeping Watch Over Carlson Ranch

I purchased some hand-painted fabrics in Chicago in 2009, and thought they would make perfect feathers, and 'voila!,' I had the idea for the next quilt in my barn series. Finding the fabric for the eyes was the most difficult part, as they were not in the light, and appeared to be dark shapes in the photo. After ripping them out a few times, my friend Ellen Carlson and I spent a good part of one day obsessing over a beautiful batik using eye-shaped stencils, searching for the perfect eyes. I think we found them.

Sir Francis

"Sir Francis" was named for Sir Francis Bacon, and the only thing they have in common is their name. I thought a little piglet would be a perfect addition to the barn series, and I'm thrilled at how cute he came out. I love the little bit of dirt on this nose. "Sir Francis" won an Honorable Mention ribbon at the IQA "Celebrate Spring" competition in April 2010. He now lives in sunny California and is very happy there (the quilt, not the piglet!)
